Neighborhood Flocks at St. Martin's
Building community, one neighborhood at a time.
St. Martin's Neighborhood Flocks are small groups of parishioners who live near one another. Our hope is simple: to help a large parish feel more like a community of neighbors.
Organized geographically, our 17 Flocks create opportunities to build friendships, share hospitality, care for one another, and grow in Christian community beyond Sunday mornings.
“I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.” — John 10:14–15
What do Flocks do?
Each Flock is encouraged to gather at least four times during the program year. Gatherings might include a potluck supper, coffee, a picnic, a neighborhood walk, or a casual get-together.
There is no prescribed program, no elaborate hosting requirement, and no expectation that everyone will attend every gathering.
Over time, we hope these relationships will help us:
Know one another: Build friendships across generations and beyond our usual Sunday circles.
Care for one another: Offer everyday kindness and practical support.
Welcome others: Help newcomers find meaningful relationships and ministries at St. Martin's.
Love our neighborhoods: Discover opportunities for hospitality and service where we live.
As Jesus reminds us in Matthew 25:40, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Through Flocks, we live out this calling by caring for one another and extending Christ's welcome throughout our neighborhoods.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my Flock?
Flock assignments are maintained in Realm, St. Martin's membership and communication system.
Here’s how to find your Flock on Realm:
Log into Realm and go to Realm Connect, then go to your profile page. On the left hand side of the screen you should see a menu. Click on Groups. That should bring up your Flock. Click on it and you can see a list of participants.
If you need help accessing Realm, contact Tracey Martinez.
What if I don't have a Flock?
We want everyone who wishes to participate to have a Flock! Contact Mtr. Justi or we'll help you find your flock!
What if I'd rather be in a different Flock?
Geography helps us connect neighbors, but relationships matter, too. If another Flock would be a better fit because of friendships, family circumstances, or practical considerations, please contact Mtr. Justi to discuss a change.
What if my Flock isn't meeting?
Some Flocks are already gathering, while others are still organizing. We're recruiting volunteer conveners to help each group get started. Let us know if you haven't heard from your Flock or would be interested in helping organize a first gathering.
Do I have to host a gathering?
Absolutely not! Hosting is voluntary, and gatherings can take place at restaurants, parks, coffee shops, retirement communities, or other accessible locations.
Do I have to attend every gathering?
No. Come when you can. We hope everyone will feel welcome without feeling obligated.
Who organizes the Flocks?
Volunteer Flock conveners help neighbors connect and organize occasional gatherings. A parish-wide Flocks Leadership Team supports the conveners and works with clergy to help this ministry grow.
Are Flocks the same as pastoral care groups?
No. Flocks are primarily communities of friendship and neighborly support. They may help people recognize everyday needs and respond with kindness, but clergy and St. Martin's pastoral care ministries remain available for situations requiring additional support or confidentiality.
Can I invite someone who isn't a member of St. Martin's?
Yes! Flocks are rooted in the life of the parish, but friends, neighbors, and newcomers are welcome at appropriate gatherings. Please coordinate with your convener.
How can I help?
You can help by attending a gathering, welcoming someone new, offering to host, or volunteering to serve as a Flock convener.
Above all, bring your curiosity, hospitality, and willingness to get to know your neighbors.
